The Riftwatchers’ emissaries arrived in Oasis, the capital of the Gloridax Empire, cloaked in dust and desperation. They sought an audience with the suam emperor. Instead, they found themselves before the Grand Consul, advisors and ministers who served at the emperor’s pleasure. Among them stood Imperial Councilor Kavor Skarn, personal advisor to the throne—a drakoshan whose words could redirect armies, whose will could end bloodlines.
As Kavor listened to the emissaries' tales of the Conclave Arcana’s hunt for the secret of Praetoria, his gaze drifted to the window, to the southern horizon. Beyond it loomed the fortress-city of Tovingor, the Chaos Empire’s last bastion on Praetoria, nestled in the northern foothills of Mount Praetorous, which still rumbled with the hunger of the dark god Uul.
His thoughts shifted to Solace and the other cities of the empire, their ramparts crumbling, their streets lined with the rubble of rebellion. Families went to bed hungry. Homes lay in ruins. Children wept for fathers who never returned.
And against this, the Riftwatchers’ warning: a few mages chasing shadows across far-off lands.
When the emperor summoned his council, Kavor spoke plainly. The Dragonsguard could not march. The empire had more pressing concerns.
The grizzled commandant councilor, Songale, and the other members of the Grand Consul agreed. The emperor delivered the Riftwatchers his answer. Not a single ronach could be spared.
But now Kavor hears rumors of floods, fires, and earthquakes. He hears stories of Praetoria’s secret, a power so great it can turn peasants into kings of kings. And once more, he finds himself staring at the horizon, wondering if the stories are true and what will remain of Praetoria if the Conclave Arcana claims the secret first.
